Tennant S20 Battery Sweeper: Excessive Dust and Poor Sweeping Checks

TENNANT S20 BATTERY · RIDE-ON SWEEPER · SOURCE CHECKED SEPTEMBER 29, 2026

Machines › Tennant S20 Battery

Quick answer: Tennant’s S20 Battery operator manual lists separate causes for excessive dusting and poor sweeping. Dust complaints can involve the hopper dust-control path, filter, seals or options; debris left behind can involve brush condition, adjustment, the hopper or the brush drive. A symptom alone does not identify a failed component.

Which S20 does this guide cover?

This page covers the battery-powered S20 in Tennant’s North America/International operator manual, document 9006704, Rev. 13 (02-2022). The printed troubleshooting table is on page 32; the optional HEPA filter table is on page 33. Those interior pages carry an older 05-2018 footer, while the cover identifies the document revision. Tennant publishes a separate Gas/LPG S20 manual. Check the power source, serial plate and installed options before using this reference. The manual cover does not establish an all-serial-number compatibility claim for every configuration.

Tennant’s US S20 product page describes the model family. Family-level specifications should not be treated as the specification of an individual Battery unit.

Why is my Tennant S20 Battery creating excessive dust?

On printed page 32, Tennant identifies several possible paths. A partly closed hopper door, vacuum fan being off, or a clogged hopper dust filter can affect dust control. Worn or damaged skirts and seals, clogged cyclones or a damaged vacuum hose are also listed. The manual includes vacuum fan failure and a tripped Thermo-Sentry among possible causes. These are documented possibilities, not a diagnosis.

First record whether dust appears at the hopper, behind the machine or mainly around the side brush. Note the hopper-door position and any visible filter or skirt condition only where it can be observed safely. If the machine has the wet side-brush dust-control option, the manual lists option-specific issues such as an empty water tank, switch position, filter or spray nozzle. Do not assume this option is installed on every S20.

If a vacuum fan fault, Thermo-Sentry condition, damaged hose or inaccessible dust path is suspected, stop use and hand the observations to a qualified service technician. The optional HEPA system has its own additional troubleshooting table on printed page 33 and should only be used for a machine actually equipped with HEPA.

Why is the S20 Battery leaving debris behind?

The same printed page 32 associates poor sweeping with worn brush bristles, brush adjustment, debris in the brush-drive area, a closed hopper door, a full hopper, and damaged recirculation flap or hopper lip skirts. A brush-drive failure is also among the manual’s possibilities.

Record whether the strip of debris follows the main brush or one side brush, whether the hopper is full, and whether brush wear is visible without disassembly. These observations help distinguish a pickup complaint from a dust-control complaint. Brush setup, drive faults and repairs require the applicable manual and trained service judgment; do not infer a part number from this symptom list.

What information should an operator capture before requesting help?

  • Machine model, battery power source and serial number from the data plate.
  • Whether HEPA or wet side-brush dust control is actually fitted.
  • Location and timing of the dust plume or debris trail, plus hopper status.
  • Any visible wear, damage or control indication, without opening protected mechanisms.
  • The manual number and revision used for comparison.

Follow Tennant’s safety instructions: stop on a level surface, set the parking brake and turn the key off before leaving or servicing the machine. Do not work beneath a raised hopper without the prescribed support. This article does not instruct electrical testing, interlock bypass or drive repair; use qualified personnel for those tasks.

Official documents and verification

Editorial verification: Manufacturer documents reviewed September 29, 2026. This independent summary is limited to the S20 Battery and documented options. Serial-specific applicability, a machine-specific diagnosis and part compatibility have not been verified.

Who prepares this reference?

Prepared by CleanEquip Pro Editorial. We organize manufacturer documentation into model-specific references and distinguish documented information from unverified observations.

This article does not represent an on-machine inspection or a certified technician’s review. Follow the applicable manufacturer manual and refer electrical, battery and other service work to qualified personnel.

Evidence and applicability

Scope and exclusions: Battery S20 only; Gas/LPG and diesel machines are excluded. HEPA and wet side-brush dust control apply only when fitted. Individual serial and replacement-part applicability are unconfirmed.

Field evidence: No first-hand inspection, technician review or measured cause-frequency dataset is documented for this article. The reporting checklist is editorial guidance, not field evidence. A reader report remains unverified until checked.

Operator and service boundary

Operator observations: Record plume location, debris pattern, installed options and visible condition from ground level with the hopper lowered and machine secured. Observe only with the machine stopped and secured as its manual requires. Key-off alone does not electrically isolate a battery machine. Before touching or cleaning components, follow the manual’s isolation procedure; if untrained, stop at recording observations.

Stop and call a qualified technician if: Dust persists, a Thermo-Sentry or fan problem is suspected, or diagnosis requires lifting the hopper or entering the drive/filter system.

Never: bypass interlocks, remove protective guards for testing, probe live wiring or repeat resets to keep an unresolved fault running. Follow the applicable battery/charger ventilation instructions; this page does not authorize battery work.

Change log

— CleanEquip Pro Editorial: Separated standard and HEPA evidence and limited the reporting checklist to ground-level observations. This entry records a document-based editorial update, not an on-machine inspection or certified technician sign-off. Printed page numbers are the document labels; PDF positions may differ. Earlier page-footer dates do not replace the cover revision.

Keep a record or report the outcome

Use the one-page Tennant S20 Battery observation sheet to record the exact machine, existing indication, symptom and earlier actions before contacting qualified service. It is an original reporting aid, not a repair checklist or manufacturer procedure.
